Featured Driver of the Month - Jermaine Jones

Jermaine Jones initially trained in ICT, but when he found there was a shortage of job opportunities and that his partner was pregnant, he quickly retrained and started his driving career.

Now, working for Pall-Ex as a Class 1 HGV Driver, Jermaine enjoys the varied role and the camaraderie that comes from working in the logistics industry.

We wanted to learn why Jermaine is always seen with a smile on his face and why he thinks driving was a great choice of career, so we spoke to him to find out more.

What was the reason for you joining the logistics industry?

“It was a complete accident that I fell into the logistics industry and it was never an ambition to do so when I was growing up.

“I am qualified in ICT, but when there was no work available at the time when my partner became pregnant, I needed to find another career quickly.

“I started driving and gaining my licenses as quickly as I could so I could support my family. I am really glad I found my way into the industry because I feel I have found a career that works for me and my family.”

What are the best bits about working as a driver in the logistics industry?

“The atmosphere in the industry, especially here at Pall-Ex, is fantastic because it is full of great people.

“I feel respected here and we get the support we need to continue to improve and develop, I feel like I am really part of the Pall-Ex family.

“To top it all off, all the trucks are always clean and that makes us all feel really proud to be out on the road, representing Pall-Ex.”

What does your daily routine look like working with Pall-Ex?

“Every morning I arrive at the Pall-Ex hub at 03:00 – That has to be one of the most challenging parts of the job, but you soon get used to it!

“When I arrive, I speak to the Transport team and they provide me with a job sheet for the day. This lists the locations I need to collect from and deliver to and I must make sure this is all done in a timely manner.

“When I’m finished, it gives me time to go home and spend time with my family which is a perk of starting so early in the day and definitely beats the normal nine to five shift pattern.”

Has anything surprised you or other people about your role?

“I think the thing that has surprised people most about me driving these vehicles is just how big they really are.

“Most people can’t believe we manage to get into some spaces as they can be very tricky to manoeuvre into, but the training and experience we have helps us to drive precisely”.

Finally, do you have any advice for anyone who wants to join the industry, or Pall-Ex?

“If, like me, you are thinking about joining the logistics industry, my advice would be to do it!

“It has provided me with a stable and rewarding career and the people are brilliant too.

“I have to thank Pall-Ex for welcoming me and supporting me in my role as this has made the experience even better!”
